In-store pickup lets a customer buy on your website and collect the order at your counter. Shopify calls it local pickup. You may know it as click and collect, store pickup, or BOPIS. Same thing, and it is built into every Shopify plan at no extra cost.
The setup takes about ten minutes and needs no app. What follows is the whole thing, in order, plus the two settings that quietly decide whether pickup ever shows up at checkout.
Why Shoppers Pick Pickup Over Shipping
- It is faster than any courier. Bought at lunch, in the bag by five. No delivery window, no missed parcel card.
- It costs the customer nothing. The shipping fee is the most common reason a cart gets abandoned. Pickup removes it.
- It is certain. Paid, held, and set aside with a name on it.
And every collection walks a paying customer past your shelves. That visit is the most valuable footfall you will get all week.
Small Tutorial: Turn On In-Store Pickup
1Add each store as a location
In your Shopify admin open Settings, then Locations, and add every store that physically holds stock: name, address, phone. Tick fulfill online orders from this location so it can take pickup orders.
Settings, then Locations, then Add location. Click to view full size
Your own stores only. Dealers, stockists, and partner retailers belong on a store locator map, not in your locations list. Every plan includes a set number of locations, so spending one on a shop you do not fulfill from is a slot wasted.
2Switch on pickup and set the promise
Go to Settings, then Shipping and delivery, open Pickup in store, and turn each location on. Two fields do nearly all the work:
The two fields that matter: the ready-time promise and the pickup notification. Click to view full size
- Expected pickup date. Usually ready in 24 hours is a promise, not a label. Pick the one your quietest staffing day can still keep.
- Ready for pickup notification. Write it like a person: Bring your confirmation email, we are the orange door on the north side. Parking and entrance details belong here.
3Stock the location, then take the first order
Open any product and check the Inventory section. Stock has to be assigned to the store itself, not only to your warehouse. A location sitting at zero for that item will not be offered as a pickup point.
That done, pickup appears inside Shopify's own checkout. The customer pays, chooses a store, and the order lands in your admin routed to that location. Mark it ready, Shopify sends your message, they walk in.
None of this sits on your cart page, so Shop Pay, Apple Pay, and the Buy Now button keep working for everyone.
Pickup Missing at Checkout? It Is Almost Always One of Three Things
Merchants lose afternoons to this. Before you blame the theme, check in this order: the location has pickup switched on, the product has stock assigned at that location, and the item you are testing with is actually in stock there. That is the fault three times out of four.
Fulfilling the Order Without a Second System
Pickup orders arrive in the same Orders list you already use, flagged with the pickup method and the store they belong to. Pull the item, hit Mark as ready for pickup, and Shopify emails the customer the note you wrote in step two. When they collect, hit Mark as picked up and it closes out.
Curbside works the same way. There is no separate setting for it. You are simply promising to carry the bag to the car, so say so in the pickup instructions and keep a parking bay clear.
What Shopify Covers, and Where It Stops
Credit where it is due: Shopify handles the order half properly. Checkout offers pickup, most themes show a pickup availability widget on the product page, and orders route to the right store on their own. One store and loyal locals? You are finished, and you paid nothing.
Scale asks harder questions. Which of your stores is nearest to me? Which one has my size on the shelf right now? Which shops carry your brand if none of them are yours? The native tools go quiet there, and that silence is where the sales leak out.
ShopBOPIS answers those, without ever touching your checkout:

- A Google Maps store locator customers can actually search: typos, abbreviations, and neighborhood names all handled by Gemini AI.
- Live stock per store, synced from the locations you set up in step one. The number on the map is the number in your admin.
- Dealers and stockists on the same map, synced from Shopify B2B Companies, without spending your location slots on them.
- Real storefront views and photos, so a first-time customer recognizes the door from the curb.
It is a seven day trial and it installs in a couple of minutes. Why imagine what your locations look like on a map when you can just look?

Common Questions
How do I turn on in-store pickup on Shopify?
Add each store under Settings, then Locations. Open Settings, then Shipping and delivery, then Pickup in store, and switch the location on. Set an expected ready time and a pickup notification message, then assign stock to that location.
Is in-store pickup free on Shopify?
Yes. Local pickup is included on every Shopify plan with no extra fee. Apps only add the discovery layer on top: a searchable store locator, stock per store, and dealer pins.
Why is local pickup not showing at checkout?
Three usual causes: pickup is not switched on for that location, the product has no stock assigned at that location, or the item you are testing with is out of stock there. Check them in that order.
Can customers choose a specific pickup time?
Native Shopify pickup gives an estimated ready time rather than a booked slot. Set that estimate from your slowest staffing day and beat it, and most customers never ask for a slot.
Can customers see which store has an item in stock?
Not across stores with the native tools alone. That is what a store locator layer adds: live stock per store on a searchable map, so the customer picks the right store before leaving the house.
Your Stores Deserve Better Than a Pin on a Map
Live stock per store, dealers on the same map, and a searchable locator your customers can actually use. Your locations are already in Shopify. Put them to work.
