How We Built a Smarter Store Locator with Google AI

I'll be honest with you: I was frustrated.

Every time I looked at Shopify store locators, I saw the same thing basic Google Maps embeds that looked generic, loaded slowly, and didn't show the one thing customers actually needed real-time inventory.

So I decided to build something better. Something that actually helped customers find products they wanted, at locations near them!. This is the story of how we built Shop BOPIS(BUY ONLINE PICKUP IN STORE) and the three technologies that made it possible.

No Offence! This is how I view your store locator.

Most Shopify merchants I talked to had the same complaints:

• "Our store locator looks like every other website's"
• "Customers can't see which location has the product they want"

And they were right. The typical store locator was just... functional. Not helpful. Not beautiful. Just there.

I knew we could do better. So I started experimenting.

Aerial View Changes Everything

The first breakthrough came when I switched from standard map view to aerial satellite view.

Instead of seeing roads and labels, customers saw actual buildings and neighborhoods. It was more intuitive. More visual.

Why Aerial View Works Better

• Visual recognition: People recognize landmarks and buildings easier than street names
• Depth perception: See if a store is in a mall, shopping center, or standalone building
• Parking visibility: Customers can spot parking lots before they arrive
• Neighborhood context: Understand what's around the store

I tested this with a few merchants and the feedback was immediate: "This actually helps me see where the store is!"

That's when I knew we were onto something.

Google Places API Makes It Smart

The second was integrating Google Places API.

This API is incredibly powerful, but most store locators don't use it properly. They just plot pins on a map and call it a day.

We went deeper.

What Google Places API Gave Us

• Reviews and ratings displays Google reviews right in the locator.
• Real operating hours: synced with Google Business profiles.
• Photos to show storefront images from Google.

But the real magic? Autocomplete search.

When customers type an address or city, Places API suggests locations as they type. It's the same experience they're used to from Google Maps which means they already know.

AI (Gemini) Makes It So Much Better

This is where it gets really cool.

I integrated Google's Gemini AI to make store locators actually understand what customers are asking.

Instead of just showing pins on a map, the locator can now answer questions like

• "Which location has this in size Large?"
• "What store is closest to downtown Manhattan?"
• "Show me stores open after 7 PM"
• "Which location can I pick this up today?"
