BOPIS in ecommerce (Buy Online, Pick Up In Store) is the bridge between your website and your physical locations. But BOPIS is not one thing. There are three common pickup formats, and the right BOPIS solution depends on which ones fit your stores and your customers.
The three BOPIS formats
1. Counter pickup
The classic. The customer orders online, staff picks and stages the order, and the customer collects it at a counter or dedicated pickup desk. It is the cheapest to launch, needs zero hardware, and puts the customer inside your store, where add-on purchases happen. The tradeoff is staff time: someone has to pick, stage, and hand over each order.
2. Curbside pickup
The customer parks, and staff bring the order out. Curbside took off because it is fast and contact-light, and it stuck because customers love not unbuckling car seats. It works best when your BOPIS solution can notify staff the moment a customer arrives and tell the customer exactly where to park.
3. BOPIS lockers
Smart lockers hold orders for self-service collection with a code or QR scan. Lockers shine for high-volume urban stores, extended pickup hours, and orders that outlive a shift. The tradeoffs are real: hardware cost, floor space, and size limits on what fits in a compartment. Most Shopify merchants start with counter or curbside and add lockers only when volume justifies the investment.
What every BOPIS solution needs, regardless of format
A way for customers to find the store. Pickup starts with location. A Google Maps store locator with search, directions, and hours is the front door of the whole experience.
Accurate per-store inventory. The fastest way to kill BOPIS is promising an item the store does not have. Your solution should show live stock per location, synced from your source of truth. ShopBOPIS syncs inventory one to one with Shopify, so the number on the map is the number in your admin.
Pickup scheduling and limits. A date picker for when the order will be ready, and a cap on pickup orders per day so a promotion does not bury your staff.
Customer notifications. Order confirmed, order ready, and pickup instructions by SMS and email. ShopBOPIS integrates Twilio and Klaviyo for this.
One dashboard for staff. Every pickup order across every location in one view, so nothing gets lost between systems.
Choosing for your store
If you run one to five locations, start with counter pickup: lowest cost, fastest launch, highest in-store upsell. Add curbside if your customers are drive-up heavy, like grocery, garden, or bulky goods. Consider lockers only at high order volume or when you need after-hours pickup. Whatever format you pick, launch with a locator plus live inventory plus notifications, because those three make or break the experience in every format.
